Jean Hugon (1919–1990) Mediterranean Port, 1967 Watercolor with gouache highlights Hand-signed and inscribed in the lower right corner: “For Yves Guérin, with best regards,” signed “Hugon” Dimensions: Sheet 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: the central portion of the sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Description: A luminous and atmospheric watercolor of a Mediterranean harbor—fishing boats and a tall-masted sailboat moored in the foreground, and beyond, a pier with a neoclassical building featuring a colonnade (columned pediment) and a Baroque bell tower, set among warm ochre facades—painted in fresh, transparent washes with areas of white left unpainted. Jean Hugon was a French painter born in Marseille who settled in Bordeaux in 1953; influenced by the Impressionists and the Fauves, he painted harbors, boats, and fishing scenes in a colorful style. (The delicate, transparent watercolor technique here differs from his better-known oil paintings; the attribution remains to be confirmed.) Signed and inscribed by hand.
