Burton Silverman (born 1928) Portrait of a Standing Man (possibly Yves Guérin himself), December 4, 1966 Charcoal Inscribed, signed, and dated by hand in the lower right corner: “For Yves Guérin with great pleasure, Burt Silverman, American painter, December 4, 1966” Dimensions: Sheet 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (provenance from a single source). This sheet constitutes the American chapter of the album—a realist artist visiting the United States who described himself as an “American painter.” Description: A masterful portrait of a distinguished man seen in three-quarter profile, one hand in his pocket, rendered in charcoal with soft shading and highlights—perhaps a portrait of the collector Yves Guérin himself. Burton Silverman is one of the leading figures of contemporary American realism; born in Brooklyn in 1928, he studied at Columbia, the Art Students League, and Pratt; a first-rate draftsman, his work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Library of Congress, and he is particularly known for the cover of the album “Aqualung” and his drawings of the Montgomery bus boycott. Signed, inscribed, and dated by hand.
