Jean-Pierre Augier (b. 1941) Procession of Penitents, c. 1970 Felt-tip pen (purple ink) Dedicated and signed by hand, lower left: “ To Yves Guérin with warm regards,” signed “Augier” Dimensions: Sheet 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Augier is an iconic artist of the Nice hinterland, which links the sheet directly to the collector’s Côte d’Azur milieu. Description: A refined and elegant felt-pen drawing depicting four hooded penitents in procession, with tall processional banners rising between them—a religious subject drawn from the Nice and Provençal tradition of penitential brotherhoods. Jean-Pierre Augier is a French sculptor from the Nice hinterland (Levens / Saint-Blaise), the self-taught “magician of iron” who welds old, discarded tools into lifelike figures; religious subjects are among his favorite themes, and he is above all an excellent draftsman, always sketching his subjects before creating them. Awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (2003), he exhibits internationally, and his collection is on permanent display at the Maison du Portal in Levens. Signed and inscribed by hand.
