Remo Brindisi (1918–1996) Volti (Faces), 1974 Colored markers Dedicated, signed, and dated by hand in the lower right corner: “ to Yves Guérin, with friendship,” signed “Brindisi,” dated “74” Dimensions: Sheet 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Description: A vigorous felt-pen drawing depicting fragmented and interlocking faces and profiles, rendered in red-orange, green, black, and gray hatching—a characteristic example of Brindisi’s “Volti,” in the expressionist and neo-figurative style of his mature period. Remo Brindisi was a major 20th-century Italian painter, born in Rome and based in Milan; initially descriptive and realistic, his work took on expressionist overtones and developed a personal style imbued with social meaning, featuring recurring themes—“Pastorali,” “Opposti,” “Venezie,” and “Volti.” His first solo exhibition (Florence, 1940) featured a foreword by Eugenio Montale; he exhibited in Paris, Nice, Milan, Venice, Rome, Cairo, and São Paulo; he chaired the Milan Triennale; and he founded a museum of modern art in Lido di Spina. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
