Oscar RABINE (1928–2018). "Parisian Landscape," 1990, no. 1030. Oil and collage on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled and dated on the back. Height: 125 cm - Width: 190 cm Note: Oscar Rabine was a Soviet-born painter who became a naturalized French citizen and was part of the major nonconformist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. A staunch advocate of unofficial art, he organized the famous “Bulldozer” exhibition in Moscow in 1974, which triggered censorship and the confiscation of the exhibited works by the authorities. He even lost his Russian citizenship and went into exile in Paris with his family. His work remains marked by his personal history, a distinctive somber atmosphere, and his melancholy, while also incorporating the new Parisian landscape that unfolded before him—as seen here in the reference to the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre. We also see his pictorial vocabulary, composed of everyday objects that he elevates to symbols, inviting reflection on the meaning of existence.
