426 - Jijé: Blondin and Cirage, pages 5 and 6 (numbered 3/1 and 3/2) in India ink and wash for an unpublished episode following “Jeunes Ailes” and intended for publication in *Petits Belges* in October 1942. During World War II, and more specifically in 1942, Jijé drew at least five panels per week (two for *Don Bosco*, one for *Jean Valhardi*, and two for *Blondin and Cirage*). Despite this intense output, the quality of the episodes remained high, and the “little Belgians” were captivated by this story in which Blondin, on vacation in Switzerland (a neutral country), indulges in model airplane flying with his friends— a hobby that echoes the “Club Spirou Aviateur” column in the Spirou magazine. Following “Jeunes Ailes,” Jijé began a sequel in which we find Blondin, Ludo, and Michel at the home of engineer Weisse with Blondin’s father. A burglar breaks into the house and steals the blueprints for a prototype airplane designed by the scientist. The police are on high alert… This new episode would never be published due to the suspension of the magazine “Petits Belges.” Given that all of Gillain’s work drawn during the war (Don Bosco, Valhardi, Spirou, Christophe Colomb…) was likely destroyed when Dupuis changed printers in 1947, these two pages constitute a rare testament to the work of this era by this great artist. Page No. 6 is signed. (Slight creases). Dimensions: 23.3 x 27.4 and 22.5 x 27.3.
