Derib: "The One Born Twice," plates 23 and 24 (labeled 66 and 67), drawn in India ink with highlights in white gouache, from the episode "The Dance of the Sun," published in the magazine Tintin in 1983. A superb diptych featuring effective panel layout in which the tribe’s young men, to become men, must undergo the Sun Dance ritual after four days without food or water, all under the watchful eye of the spirit Wakantanka. We follow Storm Rain in particular as he seeks to honor his grandfather. The Sun Dance is a fundamental and highly symbolic ceremony of the Plains Indians. The young men dance continuously from sunrise to sunset. On the fourth day, they offer their suffering to the Great Creator. Physically connected to the Tree of Life at the chest, they spin until they are set free as their flesh is torn apart. The two panels are joined. Rare. Dimensions: 72 x 46.
