7 - Archaeology. French Prehistory. Provençal Neolithic. Possible previously unpublished Provençal Neolithic stele (menhir statue with a face and chevron patterns). Rough-hewn. Urgonian-type limestone slab. Max. length: 25 cm. Max. width: 19 cm. Max. thickness: 8 cm. Approx. 4.5 kg. Provenance: Contras Plain, Eygalières Road, Orgon (Bouches-du-Rhône, Durancian area). Private French collection. Discovered in the 1970s. On both sides, a distinct outline has been carved from the block, featuring a classic rectangular-subtriangular profile with a curved apex and a “rostrum”-shaped base. Traces of surface dressing on the main face. Shaped by scraping prior to the creation of the decorative outline. Distinct cup marks: one at the base with a partial radiating design reminiscent of the Venaissin-type stele at Rocher des Doms; two others possibly marking the eyes. On the side bands, a rough-hewn incised decoration of fine lines, sawtooth patterns, oblique hatching, triangles, and “fishbone”-style chevrons, reminiscent of Trets-type stelae. The slab can stand “on end” on its short side. The interpretation of this limestone slab from the Duranche area as a stele rough-cut is plausible but not certain. Possible reuse during the Roman period. 4th millennium B.C.? See the Provençal stelae at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales and the Musée Calvet. Gagnière and Granier, Steles of Orgon and Eygalières. BSPF 1967, vol. 64, pp. 699–706. Then, Catalogue Raisonné of the Calvet Museum, 1976. Pezet (Stele of Orgon. BSPF 1975, vol. 72, pp. 218–219). Works by Masson, Mourey, Bosansky… André D’Anna and co-authors, Neolithic Anthropomorphic Stelae of Provence, Calvet Museum catalog, 2004.
