FRATELLI ALINARI (19th) Circle, The Blue Grotto of Capri, around 1880, Sepia-Photography Fratelli Alinari (19th century) Circle: Italy: "The Blue Grotto of Capri", original photograph after a famous oil painting, c. 1880, Sepia-Photography Technique: Sepia-Photography on Albumen paper, mounted on Cardboard Date: c. 1880 Description: Already known in ancient times, the Blue Grotto on Capri was considered by the locals to be a place inhabited by demons. The young painter August Kopisch, who came to Capri in August 1826, was not deterred by this. Together with his friend Ernst Fries, he discovered the cave, which is unique for its play of light and color, by swimming. The Alinari brothers from Florence were Romualdo (1830-1891), Leopoldo (1832-1865) and Guiseppe (1836-1892). Leopoldo began taking photographs in the daguerreotype era and worked for the lithographer Guiseppe Bardi, with whom he founded a photographic studio in 1850. In 1854, Leopoldo bought Bardi's shares and, together with his brothers, founded the Fratelli Alinari studio. It became one of the most important Italian studios of the 19th century and later one of the largest photographic archives in the world, which still exists today. Titled under the image on the backing. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Nature, Italy, Size: Cardboard: 19,0 cm x 24,3 cm (7,5 x 9,6 in), additional specification: 19 x 24.3 cm, base: 31 x 36.8 cm Condition: Good condition.
