J. ERHARD (1795–1822), Hikers by the Cone-Shaped Rock, 1815, Etching Johann Christoph Erhard (1795 Nuremberg – 1822 Rome): Hikers by the Cone-Shaped Rock, 1815, Etching Technique: Etching on paper Catalog Raisonné: , 78, V/V Inscription: Signed and dated lower right on the printing plate: "J. C. Erhard inv. et fec. 1815" Date: 1815 Description: The artwork depicts an idyllic landscape with a striking rock on the left that rises steeply. A hiker carrying a large basket on his back is walking along a narrow path that winds around the rock. His clothing is simple and functional, appropriate for a rural setting. In the background, a vast hilly landscape stretches out beneath a cloudy sky. A small half-timbered house nestles against the hills, nestled among lush trees. The fine lines and hatching technique create a detailed texture that makes both the rocks and the foliage appear three-dimensional. The interplay of light and shadow lends depth and dimension to the scene. Source: Landscapes in the Style of Molitor.
