Unknown (18th century), Portrait of C. Neumann (1683–1737), Copper engraving Unknown (18th century): Portrait of Caspar Neumann (1683 Züllichau – 1737 Berlin), 18th century, copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on paper Inscription: Inscribed on the printing plate: “Casparus Neumannus Regis Prussiae Consiliarus Aulicus [...]”. Date: 18th century Description: Portrait in attire typical of the time and place. Below is a miniature depicting a chemical laboratory or alchemist’s workshop. Person: Caspar Neumann (1683 Züllichau – 1737 Berlin) German chemist and pharmacist. As a supporter of Stahl’s phlogiston theory, Neumann helped it gain acceptance in Berlin. He advocated for a clear description of substances and their constituents. He rejected terms such as “philosophical phosphorus.” Even though Caspar Neumann’s name is not associated with any particular individual achievement in the fields of chemistry or pharmacognosy, his merit lies in having elevated the entire concept of pharmaceutical practice to a scientific level. It was his achievement that paved the way for an era of increased scientific interest and, as a result, significant advances in 18th-century German pharmacy. Keywords: Chemistry, Alchemy, Doctor, Science, Natural science, 18th century, Baroque, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 18.1 cm x 13.5 cm (7.1 x 5.3 in) Condition: In fairly good condition. The edges of the sheet are slightly trimmed. Scattered scuffs throughout. Dark stains and discoloration in the lower area. Short tear along the right margin.
