Date: 17th century Description: An engraved portrait of Raphael Sadeler, depicted as a half-length portrait in three-quarter profile facing left. The bearded man, of middle to advanced age, wears a characteristic pleated millstone collar, a fur-trimmed coat, and a richly decorated doublet with slit sleeves. In his left hand, he holds a sheet of paper or a drawing. The modeling is achieved through delicate, finely graded cross-hatching, which brings out the three-dimensional quality of the face and clothing. Below the image is a two-line numbering and a multi-line biographical text in French. At the bottom left and right are the engraver’s and publisher’s details. This work is believed to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
