Soutman (c. 1580–1657) after Antony van der Does (before 1609–1680): Portrait of the copperplate engraver Jacobus Matham from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on paper Print Quality: A good print with clear linework and rich black tones; the hatching is well-defined and prominent. Date: 17th century Description: A half-length portrait of Jacobus Matham viewed in three-quarter profile to the left. The elderly man wears a large pleated millstone collar, a dark coat with a visible doublet underneath, and cuffs. His wavy, graying hair and full beard are carefully rendered. The background is textured with horizontal hatching and kept dark, which effectively highlights the light-colored facial features. The modeling is achieved through delicate cross-hatching, which convincingly renders volume and the texture of the fabric. Below the illustration is a multi-line French inscription containing the name, dates of birth and death, and details of the engraver, painter, and publisher.
