P. JODE (*1604) after DANCKERTS (*1583), Portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry, copper engraving Pieter de Jode Jr. (c. 1604, Antwerp – after 1674, England) after Pieter Danckerts (1583 – 1661): Portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry, Amsterdam’s city architect, from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on paper Print Quality: A good print with crisp lines and rich black tones; the lower part of the text is slightly faded Inscription: Signed on the printing plate at the bottom: "Pet. Danckerts delin. | Pet de Jode sculpsit | Io. Meyssens excudit". Date: 17th century Description: A half-length portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry in a three-quarter view based on him. The bearded elderly man is wearing a pleated millstone collar and a dark robe with a buttoned placket. With his right hand, he holds a compass over an open sheet of paper or plan on a tabletop, while his left hand rests beside it—attributes that identify him as a master builder or architect. In the background is a column and a hint of a wall surface. The modeling is achieved through delicate cross-hatching and parallel layers; the face is rendered in a three-dimensional manner, while the background is kept flatter. Below the illustration is a multi-line caption in French containing biographical information, as well as the number “99.” This work is thought to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
