JODE (*1604) after DANCKERTS (*1583), Portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry, copper engraving Pieter de Jode Jr. (c. 1604, Antwerp – after 1674, England) after Pieter Danckerts (1583 – 1661): Portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry, Amsterdam’s city architect, from *Het Gulden Cabinet*, 17th century, copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on paper Print Quality: A good to very good impression, with clear details, rich black tones, and a well-preserved line structure. Inscription: Signed in the lower part of the printing plate: "Pet. Danckerts de Rey delin. | Pet. de Jode sculpsit. | Jo. Meyssens excudit." Inscribed in the lower part of the printing plate: "CORNEILLE DANCKERTS DE RY." Date: 17th century Description: Portrait of Corneille Danckerts de Ry, depicted as an elderly, bearded man in a half-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, making direct eye contact with the viewer. He is wearing a large, pleated millstone collar and a dark, buttoned robe. His left hand holds a compass, while his right rests on a sheet of drawing paper—attributes of an architect and master builder. In the background, on the left, is a brick wall; on the right, columned architecture rendered with hatching. The modeling is achieved through delicate cross-hatching; the facial features are rendered in a three-dimensional manner, while the background is kept flat. This work is believed to originate from the anthology *Het Gulden Cabinet*, which contained a large number of artists’ portraits.
