T. WEBER (1813–1875), Shepherd with a Basket, Alpine Region, Pencil Therese Weber (1813, Nymphenburg – 1875, Munich): Shepherd with a Basket, Alpine Region, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Watermark: Letters/Digits: D | Date: Date: 19th century Description: Probably created in South Tyrol, Tyrol, Austria, or Switzerland. Therese Weber owed her training as an artist—under some of the most renowned artists of her time, including Karl Rottmann, Christian Morgenstern, and Albrecht Adam—to the encouragement of her uncle, General Freiherr von Weber. After her father’s death, he took Therese in and recognized the girl’s talent and inclination. The artist trained herself in landscape and animal painting and studied modern languages as well as history and literature. On numerous trips to Alsace, Lorraine, and the Bavarian Inn Valley, she drew and painted nature. On a trip to Lake Tegernsee, she met the botanist August Max Einsele, who inspired her to draw plants accurately and to create a picturesque herbarium. Therese Weber excelled as a botanical painter and published several compilations on local flora, particularly that of the Alpine countries. She also used these studies herself to decorate fans. Later in life, the artist also traveled frequently, accompanied by an adopted orphan. She traveled to Italy, France, and Switzerland and participated in social life. She succumbed to diphtheria at the age of 62 and died on December 30, 1875. | Watermark: “D&C Blauw” Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Costumes, Austria, Size: Paper: 22.5 cm x 18.2 cm (8.9 x 7.2 in) Condition: In fairly good condition.
