T. WEBER (1813–1875), Scree in a River Valley, the Alps, Pencil Therese Weber (1813, Nymphenburg – 1875, Munich): Scree in a rocky river valley, Alpine region in South Tyrol, Austria or Switzerland, 19th century, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Date: 19th century Description: Sketch of a huge pile of boulders in a rocky river valley in the Alpine region. Probably Tyrol, South Tyrol, Austria, or Switzerland. On the reverse, a sketch of a shepherdess with cows by the river. Therese Weber owes her training as an artist to the encouragement of her uncle, General Freiherr von Weber, and to some of the most renowned artists of her time, including Karl Rottmann, Christian Morgenstern, and Albrecht Adam. After her father’s death, he took Therese in and recognized the girl’s talent and inclination. The artist trained herself in landscape and animal painting and studied modern languages as well as history and literature. On numerous trips to Alsace, Lorraine, and the Bavarian Inn Valley, she drew and painted nature. On a trip to Lake Tegernsee, she met the botanist August Max Einsele, who inspired her to draw plants accurately and to create a picturesque herbarium. Therese Weber excelled as a botanical artist and published several works on local flora, particularly that of the Alpine countries. She also used these studies herself to decorate fans. Later in life, the artist traveled frequently, accompanied by an adopted orphan. She traveled to Italy, France, and Switzerland and participated in social life. She succumbed to diphtheria at the age of 62 and died on December 30, 1875.
