T. WEBER (1813–1875), Landscape sketch, the foothills of the Alps, pencil Therese Weber (1813, Nymphenburg – 1875, Munich): Landscape sketch, Pre-Alps, plain with village, 19th century, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Date: 19th century Description: A sketchy landscape depicting a wide plain with rolling hills. The outline of a village with a small church is sketched in the center. Therese Weber owes her training as an artist to the encouragement of her uncle, General Freiherr von Weber, and to some of the most renowned artists of her time, including Karl Rottmann, Christian Morgenstern, and Albrecht Adam. After her father’s death, he took Therese in and recognized the girl’s talent and inclination. The artist taught herself landscape and animal painting and studied modern languages as well as history and literature. On numerous trips to Alsace, Lorraine, and the Bavarian Inn Valley, she drew and painted nature. On a trip to Lake Tegernsee, she met the botanist August Max Einsele, who inspired her to draw plants accurately and to create a picturesque herbarium. Therese Weber excelled as a botanical artist and published several compilations on local flora, particularly that of the Alpine countries. She also used these studies herself to decorate fans. Later in life, the artist traveled frequently, accompanied by an adopted orphan. She traveled to Italy, France, and Switzerland and participated in social life. She succumbed to diphtheria at the age of 62 and died on December 30, 1875. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 24.2 cm x 30.4 cm (9.5 x 12 in) Condition: Good condition. Sporadic pale spots are visible. Dark spot in the upper right. There are two marginal tears along the upper edge of the sheet. The upper right corner of the sheet is slightly bumped and creased. Fine crease in the lower right.
