M. SAVIGNY (1831-1905), Baden Castle near Badenweiler, 1854, Watercolor Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): Baden Castle near Badenweiler with a view of the Black Forest, 1854, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor on Paper Inscription: Inscribed and dated at the bottom: "Badenweiler v. d. [...] gesehen d. 28 August 1854" Date: 1854 Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. Looking high above the Black Forest and seemingly from the air, the artist depicts the ruins of Baden Castle near Badenweiler. From above, the hilltop castle appears almost hidden and withdrawn in the middle of a group of trees. The empty windows face the landscape and the Rhine flowing in the distance. A small flag flies on the battlements as a banner, reminding us of the former importance of the Zähringer and Guelph castle complex. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 12,4 cm x 18,7 cm (4,9 x 7,4 in) Condition: Good condition. In age-appropriate condition with minimal signs of wear. Occasional pale foxing is recognizable.
