M. SAVIGNY (1831–1905), A romantic castle perched on a rock in the woods, pen drawing Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg–1905): Romantic castle on a rock in the forest, 19th century, pen drawing Technique: Pen drawing on paper Date: 19th century Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831, Boitzenburg – 1905), is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Center Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814–1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to fulfill numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. The unifying depiction of nature alongside older buildings and structures is considered an expression of Romanticism. With its romanticized view of the Middle Ages, this castle ruin serves not only as a real-life model but also as a quintessential example of a Romantic castle. The well-preserved ruins stand exposed on a rocky outcrop and feature the almost obligatory slender towers and pointed spires. The aforementioned natural scenery, which occupies the foreground on the left and right, forms a picturesque frame that fades as we get closer. Verso: On the reverse is a sketchy bouquet of flowers Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 22.8 cm x 15.3 cm (9 x 6 in) Condition: Good condition. In condition appropriate for its age, with minimal signs of wear. Slightly soiled in places and minimally foxed.
