M. SAVIGNY (1831-1905), House by the pond with willow trees, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): House by the pond with willow trees, 19th century, Pencil Technique: White heightened Pencil on Paper, mounted on Cardboard Date: 19th century Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social events herself. The thought of barren landscapes and oppressive loneliness is included in this depiction. Despite the spring-like sprouting willows and sheety bushes, the scene shown by a stream near a farmstead has a chilly winter feel. Marie von Savigny also makes deliberate use of the rubbing technique in this drawing, creating dark areas that lighten towards the edges of the sheet and, despite their two-dimensionality, also reveal a fine internal structure. In contrast, there is a pale white veil over the drawing, which enlivens the gloomy lighting mood somewhat and is intended to suggest occasional reflections of light. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 14,7 cm x 24,0 cm (5,8 x 9,4 in) Condition: Good condition. In age-appropriate condition with minimal signs of wear. Pale foxing.
