M. SAVIGNY (1831-1905), Monastery on the Rhine, Pencil Marie von Savigny (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905 ): Monastery on the Rhine(?), 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Unrecognizably inscribed in pencil lower left. Date: 19th century Description: Freda Sophie Karoline Marie von Savigny, née Countess von Arnim (1831 Boitzenburg - 1905) is known to us as the wife of the Prussian envoy and co-founder of the Centre Party, Karl Friedrich von Savigny (1814-1875). As such, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic trips and had to take on numerous representative duties and attend social occasions herself. The unrecognizable designation of this drawing only suggests that a monastery complex on the Rhine is shown here. On a small island with a clear elevation towards the center, a large complex is depicted, surrounded by trees and apparently flowed around on both sides by the river. The building is equally reminiscent of the Nonnenwerth monastery island near Rolandseck and the Calvarienberg complex near Ahrweiler in the Ahr valley. Keywords: 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 12,3 cm x 19,5 cm (4,8 x 7,7 in) Condition: Rather good condition. In good condition for its age with minimal signs of wear. The sheet is slightly discolored due to age.
