A. ECHTLER (1843–1914), Composer Karl Drobisch at the Piano, Pencil Adolf Echtler (1843–1914): The composer Karl Ludwig Drobisch in his dressing gown at the piano (Augsburg), 19th century, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Inscription: Signed “A. Echtler” and inscribed “[first word illegible] Drobisch Augsburg” on the reverse. Date: 19th century Description: This sensitive depiction of a small, intimate musical moment offers a very personal glimpse into the composer’s artistic life. The scene takes place behind an open curtain, where the composer—apparently having just been kissed by the muse—sits at the piano in his dressing gown and nightcap. A young woman, also in a nightgown and nightcap, stands next to him and listens. Echtler sketched this small, intimate scene with ease and precision, offering us a direct glimpse into the musician’s everyday life. Adolf Echtler, born in Danzig in 1843, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and in Munich under Wilhelm von Diez. Appointed a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1870, he worked in Paris from 1877 to 1886 (participating in the Salon from 1879 to 1885). He died in Munich in 1914.
