A. DOLL (1826–1887), An Old Wooden Hut in the Woods, ca. 1860, Watercolor Anton Doll (1826 Munich – 1887 ibid.): Old wooden hut in the forest with branches and leaves spreading over the slats, c. 1860, watercolor Technique: Watercolor on paper Stamp: Collector’s stamp on the reverse, Georg and Dr. F. Wilhelm Denzel. Munich. 20th century, 19th century Inscription: labeled lower right: "Sketch by ADoll" Date: c. 1860 Description: In the obituary for Anton Doll, who died in 1887 and whose friends published it in 1888, as quoted by Max Gruber, they describe not only Doll’s fondness for the Munich architectural motifs for which the painter was known, but also his tendency “to stroll abroad [with his sketchbook, where] he also liked to capture ‘village scenes’ and mills.” Doll traveled through the northern and southern Alpine countries with a keen eye for memorable, sometimes unspoiled scenes. This watercolor also stems from such excursions. It depicts a solitary wooden hut standing in a forest landscape next to a pond. The small shelter is nestled beneath the foliage of two trees and appears to have served as a shed for a forest worker or forester. Provenance: F.
