Hières WBC. April 29, 1839.” Date: 1839 Description: The drawing was created during a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist, and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later to Italy in 1839. The view from Hyères shows the Place des Récollets with the obelisk erected in 1832 in memory of Baron de Stulz (Johann Georg Stulz von Ortenberg). A gentleman in a top hat is resting in the shade of a tree.
