J. KLENGEL (*1751) after LORRAIN (*1600), *The Cowherd*, around 1780, pencil Johann Christian Klengel (1751–1824, ibid.) after Claude Lorrain (1600, Chamagne, Lorraine–1682, Rome): The Cowherd, c. 1780, pencil Technique: Pencil on paper Inscription: Lower right, monogrammed: “C. Kl.” Date: c. 1780 Description: Johann Christian Klengel came from a peasant family. The fact that he was able to develop his talent and become a highly respected professor of landscape and animal painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden was thanks to enlightened figures such as the director general of the Academy of Fine Arts, Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn, who was committed to promoting talented children from the state. Klengel, whose development was closely monitored during his education, was the first graduate of this academy, and he went on to teach there himself at a young age. It was certainly his rural background that made him so well-suited to the particularities of landscape painting. The repertoire of pictorial elements in this genre was not particularly extensive. It is all the more astonishing how he “rediscovered” it, as it were, varied it, combined it, and drew different aspects from it. He was able to depict a theme such as that of the shepherd with his flock on the banks of a river as a realistic scene seemingly taken from reality. Keywords: Arcadian landscape, shepherd, cows, river, 18th century, Classicism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 13.6 cm x 20.5 cm (5.4 x 8.1 in) Condition: In fairly good condition. Fair condition with slight signs of age. Lightly restored.
