Date: c. 1790 Description: The gentle face of the mother, whose head has sunk relaxed into the pillow, is barely recognizable in the quickly drawn depiction. Even more concealed, however, is the head of the weeping child at her side, whose posture and gestures convey an expression of deep grief. The peaceful scene is disrupted not least by the tightly curved lines, which contrast with the calmly sketched figure of the reclining mother. | Watermark: Crown and ears of corn Provenance: Erhard Oskar Kaps, Leipzig; Sibyll Kaps, Leipzig Keywords: Death, mourning, vanitas, family, deathbed, 18th century, Classicism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 21.5 cm x 37.0 cm (8.5 x 14.6 in) Condition: In fairly good condition.
