7349 - Hüppi, Johannes

Hüppi, Johannes Salomé Oil on birch plywood. 2001. 37 x 28 cm. Signed "Joh. Hüppi" in brown paint on the reverse and dated; dated again and inscribed "Miami" in green paint. Hüppi transforms and exaggerates the traditional art-historical motif of Salomé into a provocative subject by having her serve a glass of white wine to her own severed head. In this way, he transposes the scene into the modern era and reflects this shift with a smooth, naturalistic, and color-intensive style. “The women in Johannes Hüppi’s paintings are representations of the feminine, all springing from a fundamental dream of the artist, even if their features and characteristics are as varied as the love stories told in his paintings. (...) Hüppi, the romantic realist, always leaves it to the imagination of his audience to spin the stories further, thereby making them part of his work.” (Belinda Grace Gardner, cited from hueppi.de, accessed September 2, 2026). Alfonso Hüppi’s son studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf. In 2000–2001, he lived in Miami, Florida, where this work was created. It is cataloged under the number KE-10-01 in the artist’s archive.
