7348 - Kehl, Gerhard

Kehl, Gerhard "Opera Singer Kit (choice of arms)" - Model kit 7 wooden parts, painted, on a velvet cushion in a light blue-painted wooden box. 2002. 18.5 x 45.5 x 32 cm (box). Signed “KEHL” in black marker and dated beneath the wooden turntable. Edition of 5 numbered copies. The sculpture follows a modular design principle. The opera singer’s arms can be arranged as desired, and their number and orientation can be increased to the point of absurdity. Kehl’s wooden figures reveal the principle of sampling and modular composition. Individual physical characteristics become interchangeable building blocks from which ever-new constellations of figures can emerge. The “Opera Singer Kit” consistently extends this principle. The individual components of the singer are presented in a velvet-lined box and left to the viewer as a kit for individual assembly.
