Holtz, Torsten Self-Portrait with a Fur Hat Oil on canvas. 2009. 40 x 30 cm. Striking fox-red hair and a red beard glow against the pale blue sky, yet in his self-portrait, Holtz refuses to let the viewer look into his eyes; he cuts off any dialogue with the viewer, thereby forcing them to turn their gaze back upon themselves. “At first glance, Torsten Holtz’s figurative depictions seem immediately accessible; upon closer inspection, however, they tend to unsettle and pose a mystery.
