Metzkes, Robert Reclining Figure Terracotta, engobed. 2006. Approx. 41 x 49 x 26 cm. Monogrammed “RM” (ligated) in the center of the lower edge and labeled “3rd Variation.” At peace with herself, the woman, draped in a long dress, reclines on a divan. Her delicate facial features and relaxed posture lend the figure a sublime yet ethereal aura. Characteristic of Metzkes’ human figures, this figure, too, appears to remain in a state of quiet reflection and inner concentration. Since 1985, Metzkes has devoted himself increasingly to colored engobed terracotta sculpture. He learned to work with clay and the technique of coloring it with the support of his sister Verena Hann, a renowned ceramicist. His predominantly life-size figures develop a uniquely timeless effect through the combination of physical presence and inner contemplation.
