Schade, Titus "Shelf - Three Windmills" Acrylic on wood. 2020/21. 40 x 50 cm. Signed “Titus Schade” in black marker on the reverse, dated and titled; typographically labeled on the reverse on a sticker from the Eigen+Art gallery and marked with the work number “TS/21/009.” A surreal, mystical gloom envelops the precisely crafted, minimalist composition. Schade divides the deserted image horizontally into two planes, each framed in cherry wood like a shelf compartment and characterized by a box-like spatiality that underscores the stage-like, artificial nature of the composition. The windmill motif, which has appeared repeatedly in his paintings over the past ten years, is also found here in a triple row as a geometrically abstracted form; like the stylized trees and the castle, it symbolizes the timeless universality of the visual language. “It’s also very important in my painting to emphasize that this is a second universe—in other words, a parallel world. My world operates according to its own rules, but draws on our world for its representational elements.” (Titus Schade in an interview with Kevin Hanschke, collectorsagenda.com, accessed September 10, 2026). After completing his studies at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Schade was a master student under Neo Rauch; he now works in his studio on the Spinnerei grounds in Leipzig.
