Kreutz, Heinz "Tondobild 36" Oil on canvas. 2002. 70 x 60 cm. Signed "Kreutz" (scratched into the wet paint) and dated at the bottom center; signed again in black with a brush on the reverse, dated twice, titled, and labeled. Spherically floating clouds of color, reminiscent of William Turner, drift through the basic form of the tondo, at the center of which something glows like a pale sun. Since the 1990s, the artist has increasingly devoted himself to these color formations. In 1952, Heinz Kreutz, along with Otto Greis, Karl Otto Götz, and Bernard Schultze, was one of the founding members of the Quadriga artists’ group, which helped solidify German postwar painting’s connection to the international artistic avant-garde. This significant group emerged from their first joint exhibition on the very opening night at the Zimmergalerie Franck in Frankfurt am Main. At the dawn of the Informel movement, Kreutz’s works were characterized by their wild formal language; however, beginning in the late 1950s, he developed a focused and clear painterly language, particularly through his study of Japanese calligraphy.
