Fußmann, Klaus Rapeseed in a Blue Jug Gouache and pigments on watercolor paper. 1990. 22.8 x 29.5 cm. Signed “Fu” in light gray chalk and dated in the lower right corner. The sunny yellow glow of rapeseed blossoms is a recurring motif in Fußmann’s work over the years, whether as a luminous field in a northern German landscape or, as here, radiant and compact, as a bouquet with a crumbly texture in a delicately contrasting light-blue jug against a deep, dark black-green background. “The colors of the flowers far exceed our expectations. They are not only more radiant than we imagine, but also more refined in their tonal values.” (Klaus Fußmann, quoted from klausfussmann.com, accessed July 28, 2026). By compressing the portrait-oriented motif into a landscape format and cropping the top and bottom, the artist heightens the tension in this balanced composition.
