Lüpertz, Markus Harlequin Bronze, painted, on a wooden base. 2003. 22 x 13 x 14.5 cm. Monogrammed on the base with the artist’s signature “ml” and inscribed “E.(preuve d')A.(rtiste)” as well as the foundry mark “SCHMÄKE DÜSSELDORF.” Using an expressive formal language and apt abstraction, Lüpertz depicts the seated Harlequin lost in thought, in a contemplative pose. The harlequin is a recurring motif in the artist’s oeuvre. A large version (approx. 150 cm high) of a bronze harlequin, with slightly longer legs seated on a taller pedestal, was designed as early as 1984 and has stood since 1997 as the central figurative sculpture in Karlsruhe’s Narrenbrunnen, which honors the local carnival clubs. Produced in an edition of 65 copies by Misereor, Aachen, plus 25 artist’s copies, created using the lost-wax casting process. Each sculpture was hand-painted by the artist himself, a process through which Lüpertz achieves a certain unique character; in addition to the red/green versions, there are also variants in blue/white. Magnificent casting, strikingly painted. Total height including base: 25 cm. - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
