Fetting, Rainer Portrait of a Young Man with a Red Headscarf Gouache on Fabriano vellum. 1983. 70.5 x 50 cm. Signed “Fetting” in pencil and dated at the bottom center right. With expressive, bold strokes from a broad brush, Fetting captures the portrait of the young man wearing a long red headscarf. Rainer Fetting studied under Hans Jaenisch at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1972 to 1978. In 1977, he founded the Galerie am Moritzplatz together with Helmut Middendorf, Salomé, Bernd Zimmer, and others. His subjects frequently include urban scenes (often Berlin) as well as portraits, nudes, and still lifes, all typically rendered in vibrant colors and dynamic expressiveness. In this energetic portrait, too, the young man is rendered in a dramatic color contrast of bold yellow, green, and red, with a gestural, expansive brushstroke. The artist lived in New York from 1983 onward, where this drawing may have been created; it fits well into the series of works inspired by Arab culture created that same year (see, among others, “Arab and Camel II” from 1983, “Nude—30 Years of Galerie Deschler Berlin,” exhibition at Galerie Deschler, Berlin 2025, viewed online on October 5, 2026).
