Arman Sliced Violin Bronze, partially polished, with a golden or dark brown patina, on a black marble base. 1994. 63 x 20 x 17 cm. Signed “Arman.” Edition of 100 numbered copies. Arman is fascinated by the deconstruction of musical instruments, and the elegantly curved contours of the violin in particular inspire him to take it apart and reconstruct it. The split parts of the upright instrument, cut lengthwise, form a dynamic new composition that, together with the violin bow, stretches upward in all four cardinal directions. Arman thus explores and visualizes the movement and energy of violin playing, and he enhances the sculpture’s sense of depth through the bronze elements’ varied patinas. Published by Edition Diego Strazzer, Verona. Cast by Fonderia Bonvicini, Verona. The edition is listed in the Arman Studio Archives, New York, under number APA# 8401.94.075. An excellent cast with a richly varied patina. Total height with base: 69 cm. - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
