Kooning, Willem de Untitled (Erotic Drawing) Pencil on vellum, mounted on backing board. ca. 1972. Approx. 20.3 x 25.2 cm. Signed “de Kooning” in pencil lower right. With wildly overlapping, gestural, and expressive pencil lines, de Kooning forms the outlines of a human orgy. His works are regarded as a metamorphosis of visible reality and his own inner world. In doing so, he succeeds in maintaining a balance between unbridled expressiveness and a well-balanced pictorial composition, as well as between figuration and abstraction. Willem de Kooning was born in Rotterdam in 1904, studied in the Netherlands, and moved to the United States in 1926–27, where he established himself in New York. He was regarded as a leading figure of Abstract Expressionism and became famous for his gestural painting and his late “Woman” series, which combine figuration and abstraction.
