Desmazières, Erik "L'Atelier René Tazé" Etching on vellum. 1979. 67.5 x 52 cm (74.5 x 56.3 cm). Signed “Erik Desmazières,” dated, and titled. Edition of 90 numbered copies. Fitch 40. This striking, large-format print depicts the interior of the Parisian master printer René Tazé, who trained at the Atelier Leblanc and with the Crommelynck brothers before opening his own workshop in 1978. Numerous prominent contemporary printmakers, such as Jim Dine, Jean-Baptiste Sécheret, and Érik Desmazières, have their works printed by Tazé. Born in Rabat in 1948, Desmazières is considered one of the most important French printmakers of his generation. The artist first studied at the renowned Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and, beginning in 1971, devoted himself entirely to the art of etching. His technically masterful etchings depict spatially interlocking, often imaginary architectures, meticulously detailed cityscapes, cabinets of curiosities, and libraries. This depiction of an interior is also of great aesthetic and compositional appeal. The wheel and the arabesque-like mechanics of an etching press dominate the composition and lend the motif remarkable visual impact and creative originality. This sheet is the first version of this motif. Excellent print with margins. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
