Marwan Head of a Boy Oil on canvas. 1975. 55.3 x 38.2 cm. Signed "Marwan" in red with a brush and dated in the lower right corner. Created in 1975, this portrait holds a special place within Marwan’s body of work. While the artist was intensely engaged with the human face during this period—and his portraits increasingly evolved into condensed “landscapes of the soul” that transcended the individual portrait—this depiction remains close to its model. Depicted is the son of a family who were friends with Marwan. With his head slightly tilted and an alert gaze, the boy appears both present and introspective. The soft color transitions and the fluid contours barely dissolve the physiognomic forms, as is often the case in his other works. The intimacy with the subject lends the portrait its distinctive character.
