Schultze, Bernard [*] "Harvest" Oil on canvas. 2002. 100 x 80 cm. Indistinctly monogrammed “BS” in blue with a brush in the lower right and dated; signed “Bernard Schultze” on the reverse, dated, and titled. A large-format painting, rendered in harmoniously luminous colors and executed with a free, painterly gesture. Schultze’s first informal works, which significantly helped shape international postwar art, emerged in the 1950s. His style—in which lyrical abstraction meets vibrant color and a delicate formal language—is evident in this work. Schultze creates a pictorial space whose interpretation, due to its non-representational nature, is based purely on personal associations and emotions. However, as is often the case in his work, Schultze provides allusions and references to nature as a starting point. Bernard Schultze, a participant in documenta II, documenta III, and documenta 6, asserts a unique position in art history and among the artists of his time with his lyrical, abstract, and unmistakable style. Lit.: Bernard Schultze 1915–2005.
