Ungerer, Tomi Cowboy Couple (USA) Chalk and brush in black on glassine. Probably 1967. 41.5 x 28.8 cm. Signed "T. Ungerer" in pencil in the lower right corner on both the front and back. Ungerer moved to America in 1955, where he enjoyed great success and soon became part of New York’s artistic elite. In 1967, he was so outraged by American involvement in the Vietnam War that he designed a series of provocative posters. Originally commissioned by Columbia University, the university rejected some of them due to their politically controversial content, and there was widespread outrage in political and social circles. However, these posters quickly became cult classics (see tomiungerer.com, accessed July 15, 2026). The motif presented here was published by Ungerer himself in 1967 as an enlarged poster titled “USA” (see Jack Rennert (ed.), *The Poster Art of Tomi Ungerer*, Zurich 1971, no. 33, ill. p. 28). His book *America* was published in 1975.
