Roeckenschuss, Christian Untitled (K287) Acrylic and clear varnish on hardboard. Probably around 1959. 60 x 120 cm. On the reverse side of the frame, in pencil—likely by another hand—is the work number “K287.” Toward the end of the 1950s, a young, avant-garde generation of artists working in a concrete style began to emerge in Berlin. Among them was the artist Christian Roeckenschuss, who, during this creative phase in his Tempelhof studio, shifted away from figurative art toward constructive art and Minimal Art. The artist found his personal style in geometry, non-representational art, systematic order, and a clear color palette—a style that characterized his entire body of work. This painting is a characteristic example of his early color-field painting, in which he experiments with rectangles and circles, and whose block-like, angular forms bring his compositions close to the hard-edge style.
