Antes, Horst Female Nude in an Armchair Pencil on glassine. 1965. 29.5 x 21 cm. Signed “Antes” in pencil lower right; marked on the reverse, presumably by another hand. An early drawing by the artist, who captures the standing female nude in linear abstraction. As always, he depicts the relatively large head in profile, thereby preserving the figure’s aloofness. With his archetypal figures, Horst Antes distinguished his artistic practice from postwar informal painting and contributed to the development of a new figurative painting style. Antes studied under HAP Grieshaber at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 1957 to 1959. Inspired by Willem de Kooning, who combined informal and figurative elements, he gradually began to develop his “head-footers.” Provenance: Lambert Tegenbosch Art Gallery, Heusden, Netherlands (with its adhesive label on the back of the frame, inscribed there and bearing inv. no. 7930) Sotheby’s, London (with its adhesive label on the back of the frame, undated) Private collection, Belgium - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
