Glöckner, Hermann Interpenetration in Black and White Against Red Tempera on folded paper. 1971. 71.5 x 49.5 cm. Signed "Hermann Glöckner" in pencil on the reverse, dated, and labeled "Faltgrafik." Glöckner’s early work from 1971 was created during the first years of his exploration of the new technique of folding, which he had only begun in 1969. Following this three-dimensional process—even though the resulting work returns to a two-dimensional plane—a spatial presence can still be experienced. The tempera technique further enhances the almost sculptural effect of this piece, which gains a lively and delicate surface through the texture created by the painting technique. “Glöckner recounts how, in 1969, he had to make a virtue of necessity, how he thereby gave rise to this ‘unique form of printmaking’ and mastered its technical aspects.”The first actual paper fold was created in 1969, when the idea arose to include an original sheet with a series of catalogs for the anniversary exhibition. Since the catalog was not a very large format, I folded a sheet and colored the sections created by the fold accordingly. This resulted in a form that was closely related to the constructive sheets.” (Hermann Glöckner. Werke 1909–1985, ifa Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, Stuttgart 1993, p. 25).
