Glöckner, Hermann Red Wedge Among Black (Break-in) Tempera on folded paper. 1981–83. 50.5 x 69.5 cm. Signed “Glöckner” in pencil and dated on the reverse. Hermann Glöckner’s works radiate understated simplicity, constructivist rigor, and quiet elegance. Through razor-sharp folds, the artist creates sections of the surface, which he paints precisely using the crease lines. The velvety, intense color thus forms a distinct, clear edge against the white background. In the GDR, his work was controversial due to its abstract and non-representational forms, yet he had a large circle of admirers, not only in his own country but throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. In his folded works, we find an unpretentious, almost meditative approach that exerts a strong appeal on viewers today in the dazzling art market. These serene folded works permeate Glöckner’s oeuvre—which, taken as a whole, is quite heterogeneous—right up until the end of his life.
