Wilding, Ludwig "SINGLE PS 8 a" Silkscreen print on Plexiglas, cardboard, and hardboard in a white-framed wooden box. 1971. 80.5 x 80.5 x 5.5 cm. Signed “Wilding” on the reverse on an adhesive label; dated and titled. As in every series of his works since the 1960s, Wilding here too uses lines to create overlapping grids and grid structures. When these overlapping structures shift relative to one another between the foreground and background planes of the object box, three-dimensional visual experiences and moiré effects emerge. These virtual movements within the image intensify depending on the viewer’s movement. The artist’s goal was to disrupt perspective-based vision and, in doing so, to deconstruct human visual habits while placing the viewer in an active role. Such analytical explorations of the laws and structures of vision, along with the scientific study of spatial illusion, form the starting points of Wilding’s art. He studied in Stuttgart under Willi Baumeister from 1952 to 1954 and was a member of the international group AOS (Art of Seeing). Despite their serial conception, Wilding’s “Singles” are unique works.
