Geiger, Rupprecht "61/14" Graphite, partially smudged, on vellum. 1961. 70.5 x 50.5 cm. Signed "Geiger" twice in pencil in the corners on the reverse, as well as dated and inscribed with the work number "61/14." A large-format drawing of a meditative nature, featuring subtle smudges and hatching in varying shades of gray and chiaroscuro transitions. Sharp contrasts stand alongside soft gradations; a hint of the finest graphite traces sits beside color applied with force, shimmering in a greasy, dark silver. The drawing, with its reduced formal language, is detached from any concrete subject matter, yet still follows very clear rules and structures. The artist creates all structural variations exclusively through vertical and horizontal movements of the graphite pencil. Nothing about it is precisely geometric; rather, the drawing seems to vibrate, opening up into the depth and solitude of an imaginary infinite space.
