Womacka, Walter Head Oil on hardboard. 1959. 40 x 55 cm. Monogrammed "Wo." in light blue crayon on the lower right and dated; marked "59" in black chalk on the reverse. Broad black outlines and harsh shading emphasize the young man’s striking features; the horizontal format gives the portrait plenty of space on the sides. Trained in Braunschweig under Bruno Müller-Linow, at the Academy of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar under Otto Herbig, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, among others, under Fritz Dähn and Rudolf Bergander, Womacka served for many years as rector of the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Art. This painting was created during his early years in Weißensee. The fact that Womacka, then only 34 years old, was elected vice president of the Association of Visual Artists in 1959 underscores his growing importance as an artist in the GDR.
