Metzkes, Harald Quadriga Oil on canvas. 1980. 35 x 45 cm. Signed “Metzkes” in blue-black paint and dated in the lower left corner. Eye to eye with the horses, the artist looks from the east toward the Quadriga of the Brandenburg Gate, behind which a thunderstorm is brewing against a dramatically cloudy sky. Metzkes intensifies this effect through the elevated viewpoint, which allows the western part of the city to be glimpsed, if at all, only in the darkness of the horizon. Rather than depicting the urban scene, the artist translates it—with lively, sweeping brushstrokes in thickly applied layers of paint—into a symphony of colorful swaths and gradients.
